Dress shirts with French cuffs don't have buttons. The cuff (sleeve end) of the shirt is held in place by a piece of jewelry called a cufflink.

These need not be expensive shirts. Many common dress shirts such as some from VanHuesen are made with French cuffs.

A formal shirt (tuxedo) should always have cufflinks and studs. Pearls for day wear and black on silver or gold for evening wear.

A cufflink is a decorative fastener worn to fasten the two sides of the cuff on a shirt. Cufflinks are designed only for use with link cuffs (also known as French Cuffs), which have buttonholes on both sides but no buttons.
Cufflinks make excellent gifts for Birthday presents, Christmas or Fathers Day.

They literally link the cuff of your shirtsleeves together. Unlike pant cuffs, shirt cuffs have a slit in the side to allow for hands to fit through. The cufflinks close this slit.

Some men's shirts don't have buttons on the end of the sleeve. A cuff link is used in place of the button. Men's shirts that need cuff links are very expensive. If you rent a tuxedo the shirt that comes with it might need cuff links.

A "link" is something that connects two things, in this case, the cuff (or the end of the sleeve) of your shirt. Cuff links are just a more fancy form of buttoning your shirt.
