If not Tolkien, the only other I can think is Frank Herbert, author of 'Dune'. Herbert has written many sci-fi works, but is best known for Dune; he wrote six in the series and apparently had plans for a final book seven before he died.
Some years ago, his son Brian (who has published on his own) started going through his fathers notes and decided to write back stories based them. He enlisted the aid of writer Kevin Anderson. Thus far, the two have produced two sets of trilogy prequels to the Dune series and are working on finishing the final novel that was to be part seven. Book one out now, while the rest is due later this year.

It really sounds like you're hinting at J.R.R. Tolkien. Since his death in '73, he has had a ton of material published posthumously. His son Christopher has been the editor of much of this.
