Neanderthals evolved around a million years ago, slightly before Homo Sapiens. The 2 did coexist for a time, but didn't seem to associate with each other.

In response to UHHH, Neanderthals had bigger brains and were physically stronger than the homo sapiens that replaced them. Also, no evidence has yet been found that Neanderthals and homo sapiens interbred. Even with modern DNA testing.

It seems likely to me that Neanderthals were adapted to living in ice age conditions and when the ice age receded in Europe, homo sapiens moved in and were probably better at surviving and reproducing faster in a warmer climate.
