I am attending a meeting in Las Vegas in August and I would like to see the skywalk. Should I take an organized tour from Las Vegas or is it better to rent a car? Can I make it in 1 day? Any special tips? Thank you very much!

One day is more than enough time. You need about 2 1.2 hours from LV to sky walk Summer maybe three hours.
If you rent a car, get a four wheel drive with very high clearance. You travel several miles on old dirt roads and have read about some damage to vehicles.
Since you live in another country, I would encourage you to make the visit. Once in a lifetime trip.

I have heard from very reliable sources that it is a basically a rip -off and most definitely not worth the trip or the money it costs to see it . Despite all the advertising hype it is not at the The Grand Canyon. What most people thing of as the Grand Canyon is 160 miles upriver.
If you want to do an amazing day trip for less money and less time . There are two really great possibilities :
Zion National Park which you can easily reach from Vegas in 2 hours
and Death Valley National Park which resembles another planet and a has a valley floor that's -283 ' below sea level
The park itself is about 5200 sq miles but the east[down ]side of the escarpment that created the " valley "is at least 3 times that size . It is just an incredible place
In summer the population density of Death Valley NP is something like 1 /10 person per square mile

I think it takes about 2.5 hours to get there... A part of it is on a very bumpy road. I think it costs like 45 bucks to get in and another 25 to walk across the skywalk. If you can find an all inclusive that is cheaper than the cost of rentting a car + gas and admission, I'd go on it.
