Your questions needs some more details , to get answered.
Firstly there are many types of servers like
ftp,http,news,smb,etc..
Then you must have specified the platform like
Windows , linux,mac,etc...
Then you must decide on the software because there are many softwares available for each of the server types.
For example there are many softwares like apache, webHost,etc.. for installing a web server (http server).
Then comes the configuring part.

Are you talking about Windows Server 2003? It's usually best if you go through their configuration walkthrough. It all depends on what you are using the server for.
