Water closets are a simple functioning device. Water is held in the tank. When the handle is pushed, a rubber seal (flapper) lifts up and allows water to discharge into the bowl through holes on the underside of the rim. The lower part of the bowl contains a trap, similar to the ones under sinks, that fill with water to prevent sewer gas from entering the house. The waste goes through the trap and into the sewer line and to the main drainline. After the water has left the tank, the flapper reseats and the fill-valve replenishes the water in the tank. There is a device in the tank that shuts off the water supply when it reaches the proper level. It may be a ball shaped float or a built-in float in the fill-valve. Hope this helps.
