My crowntail betta fish might have fin rot...I can't tell for sure...can I give it fin rot medication just in case? (in other words, is it ok for me to give the fish fin rot medication given the fact that the fish may not have fin rot after all)?

Here is a site with pics and treatment info, don't use medication unless you HAVE to use it, it might hurt your fish

No, you should not give your betta fin rot medication if you're not sure he has fin rot. Medicating unnecessarily will stress out your betta - as any chemicals added to your water will - and will allow your betta to build up resistance to the medicine, reducing its effectiveness the next time you really need it.

However, if you're not sure whether your betta has fin rot, the best thing you can do is to do a water change. If you keep your water very clean, bettas can often overcome fin rot on their own, if you've caught it at an early stage. Add some aquarium salt to your water - half a teaspoon per gallon - and some black water extract (Kent makes a good brand). The salt will prevent further bacterial infection, and the black water extract will soften the water, likening it to the brackish water that bettas enjoy in their natural habitat. This will reduce stress on the fish and help him battle the bacteria on his own. If you can find Indian Almond Leaves, these have the same effect as the black water extract, but I find them to be more effective though harder to find.

Using meds unneccessarily isn't advised. Like people and diseases, fish diseases are becoming immune to a lot of the meds, even salt. What I would use, is PimaFix and MelaFix combined. They're both a natural herbal remedy that work great on minor fish diseases like fin rot. They won't affect the water quality, or the beneficial bacteria if you have him in a cycled tank. It basically won't hurt anything to use it as opposed to using a med-which can stress fish. And, keep the water clean by doing frequent water changes, not just now, but all the time. That'll be the main factor in preventing a lot of diseases or problems.

You can use the medication safely, since it won't hurt the fish. Plus if it has fin rot it will help save your fish. These product are safe to use. If it looks like it's fin rot then it most likely is. These products are very easy to use.

Hope your fish gets better soon.
