Does Propane Have An Odor

Since propane is an odorless gas a chemical is added to it to give it that distinctive odor you refer to so you will smell it if there is a leak and take immediate action. Propane's distinctive odor usually comes from the injection of no less than 1.5 pounds of ethyl-mercaptan per 10,000 gallons of liquid propane. Since propane is heavier than air it can settle into the fitting on the fill hose and in low spots around the filling area. If it is a calm day then the propane could remain in these gas puddles for a long time, giving you ample opportunity to enjoy it's pleasant smell when you show up to refill your propane tank.

The smell was put into propane for safety.
A lot of natural gas has no smell at all, so it was very dangerous if there was a leak, and you could not smell it, at all, so they put some chemicals in it to be safe.

The other answers being good - the stink at the refill place comes from the small amount of propane left in the valve when the filling is done. It hangs around for a long time. You will probably smell the same smell but over a smaller area when you disconnect the regulator, etc., on your tanks at home.

Actually most natural gases like propane don't stink at all but have smells added to them so that if there is a leak that you can detect it, if it didn't you'd blow up.

Skunk gas is added for safety reasons. That way if you have a leak, you can smell it. Without the tell tale smell, you could have an explosion or fire from a gas leak, this will help alarm you to get out of danger.

Well, I think that some companies actually odorize their propane tanks so that when carbon monoxide emits (an odorless but deadly gas), we can detect it and get out into a ventilated area.
