I can't hold my breath very long because I laugh all the time. When I hold my breath I am dying to let it out because I want to laugh. Even when I go swimming- if I am swimming under water (of course I am holding my breath) I always breathe out before I reach the surface because I start laughing.............

When I was in college, I did synchronized swimming and my duet partner wanted to work out a number in which one of us did shadow swimming of the other (one on the surface and one two feet down doing the same movements) She and I got up to about a minute each although she could do more.
After I left, I went back for the performance the following year and they used a blacklight spotlight to illuminate decorations on the costumes and in the middle of this rather large number she shadow swam under her female partner for over 3 minutes doing curves and turns for the whole time while they weaved among the other figures. The person who was with me thought that I was going to bust a gut cheering.
At one point, I could dive from one end of a 25 yard pool, swim under water the length, turn and swim almost all the way back without breaking the surface.

i am a swimmer, a scuba diver, and a free diver. when i am getting ready for a free dving compotition (free diving is going as deep as you can with only 1 breath) the trick is to hypre ventalate. that means, you breath really fast for about 5 minutes before you swim. the amount of corbon dioxide in your blood system tricks your brain into letting you hold your breath longer

I use to commercialy dive lobsters and speer fish. Before i would tank up i would free dive down to make sure the spot was worth it.Sometimes up to 40 feet down.At the time i could hold my breathe over 2 minutes. It takes a few days to build up to that each season.

I used to do synchronized swimming and the coach would have us hyperventilate slightly before starting underwater laps to improve our breath control. It worked pretty well. After a while of practicing we could all do about four lengths of the pool underwater without coming up.
