I play flute and my boyfriend plays piano, and we've talked about picking up some pieces to try together. My background is more ensemble, and he is used to individual recitals. We're both a little rusty, so something that's light and on the simple side would be best. Thank you!

why not start with looking for the music yourself and trying things along the way. You know your abilities better than any of us here.

You've gotten some wonderful answers here, but understand that the Chaminade, the Martin, any Bach sonata, etc. would probably be an exercise in frustration for someone who has played mostly in bands (all of those pieces are for more advanced players.)

I would go to a music store...you can try www.sheetmusicplus.com , and pick up a book of wedding arrangements for flute and piano (as long as your bf doesn't consider that some sort of evil hint...lol:P.) Those are quite beautiful and often very well done yet simple to play for a little afternoon flute/piano jam session.

i recommend Sicilienne from Pelleas et Melisande (by Faure). It was my first competition piece- it has a beautiful tune, and the piano accompaniment was easy-ish (my flute teacher could play it without having to bring in the recital accompanist)

heres a guy playing it (kinda too fast- but you can get the tune)

you can download the sheet music thru this service
www.musicnotes.com/sheetmusic/mtd.asp?ppn=MN0048500

here is a link to buying the sheet music- you can look at the first page of the flute solo (it's only 2 pages total) and the first page of the piano/flute score (mostly arpeggios for the piano)

I've always been partial to the Bach flute sonatas. He wrote 6 altogether. Some of them are very lyrical, while some others require some pretty stiff breath control, but they are gorgeous. You will find some very playable pieces.

Some fo them are scored for keyboard, flute and viola de gamba. The viola de gamba part can be left out (and generally is in may recordings) without any detrimental effect.

Concertino by Chaminade is a beautiful French piece.

If you want something contemporary, try Ballade by Frank Martin.

There are a lot of great piano/flute pieces out there. Good luck!

I would suggest the "Meditation" from the opera Thais.

or Beethoven's "Fur Elise":
