I am hugely obsessed with military history, warfare, and what might have beens in history had the way things turned out they way they did history could have been completely different for us today...So I thought I would pose this question to you all..
For all you History Buffs...What was/were your most favorite turning points in History?? and why?

For me..One of my most favorite turning points in history was the Battle of Stalingrad, in which a severely malnourished Soviet Union military destroyed the German war machine at the gates of Stalingrad, which ultimately ended in the defeat of the Nazi regime, had the German's gotten through and destroyed Stalingrad and the Soviets, who knows what might have been? I also am fascinated by the battle at The Horns of Hattin, in which the Knights Templar and the Christian Army was annhilated by the army of Saladin.

Tell me of your favorite turning points in History, and why its your favorite

D-day.

I have been thinking of it recently and yours is more the real turning point. But D-day was when it was clear it was over. And probably means more to me as my country was involved taking Juno Beach on D-day. I think that goes for most of the west, why we think D-day was the turning point. It was the one that the west participated in.

Salamis this was the Naval battle that broke the Persians back. It is also crucial as this battle even more so than Thermopylae gave rise to the form of government known as democratia or today democracy. It also helped establish a pattern of western military dominance over the Eastern world. With this battle it set the stage for Plataea in which the entire Spartan Army routed the Persians one last time. Finally this Battle saved Europe from an invading army that would not be matched in size till the Normandy operations a few millinia later.

you would love Harry Turtledove's alternate history series, where the South wins the Civil War ( four books) allies with England ( cotton>textiles) while the North allies with Germany ( heavy German Irish immigrant population) so WW1 is fought not only in France but Virginia, and WW2 not only in Europe but in the Mid Atlantic states ( Pittsburgh does a nice fill in playing Stalingrad).......

but I digress......

I think about that day in Sarajevo.....three anarchists throw a grenade at Archduke Ferdinand's car as it goes by......it doesn't explode; the driver does what drivers are still trained to do.....clear the area and fast. He goes left right left right and then stops, as he realizes he's lost.

The three anarchists start walking home, grousing about bad homemade fuses; turn a corner and what is in front of them? Ferdinand in a stopped car. Principe pulls his Saturday Night Special......

4 years and 10, 000,000 dead later, the 500 year old Ottoman Empire is gone, replaced by a bunch of new countries, some called Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Palestine (soon to be Israel), Jordan; the 500 year old Hapsburg empire is gone, with Bosnia, Serbia etalia on the scene; Imperial Germany is gone, replaced by the Wiemar Republic and soon to come Nazi Germany, the Russian Empire is gone replaced by Communist Soviet Union.........

EVERYTHING we know about the last 100 years of history is because a driver got lost and a 20 year old punk got lucky with three shots one summers day
