That's communism in a nutshell. It seems to fail every time though. Probably has something to do with basic human nature and our need to own things.

1. if everything was free, no one would have to work to have things.
2. not all of the poor find it harder to earn money, some of them choose to let others supply things to them, others choose ways to get money or things by not working for them, no one should go without the necessities of life, nor should they expect others to provide them. there should be ways of earning that are flexible enough to fit the need.
3. the people who can, have a responsibility to themselves, as do the people who can not.
4. we covet what we earn, because we have earned it by making an effort to do so. i was raised to be responsible for taking care of myself and the people i love, or don't know. i expect others to be respectful of themselves, to be responsible for themselves, and to be respectful of me.
as a token of my graciousness, of the thankfulness in my heart, i do reach out to those in a less fortunate situation. i too, adopt families for christmas, that have fallen on bad times, i adopted a soldier, i am always there for people that i love, and people i have never met, to lend a helping hand. i am so thankful for my health, my daughter and her health, that i show my thanks in gratitude towards others.

I think it is the responsibility of EVERYONE to help those less fortunate. I help build houses with Habitat for Humanity. I pick two families a year to provide Christmas dinner and presents for. I don't care if all you have is a tent to live in... you can still give back.
Many times we get so selfish with what we have because we don't understand the reality that when you give to others, you get back so much more than you gave. Loosen your purse straps and watch your heart soften. God made it a benefit of giving.... ya get back!!!

There are lots of creative people who enjoy working - creating things, painting, singing, etc. For them it is easy to work.
But, your question of making everything free does not make sense. Supply and demand motivates creativity. People like receiving compensation for work they have done, and those who produce deserve the fruits of that success. Why should those of us who do the producing give it away to those who won't work? No it is not our responsibility to provide everything to those who won't (can't is a different story, and the handicapped deserve to be cared for).
That is the problem we are facing in the USA right now with the immigration problems. People with skills and desire are welcome to make their contributions. However we are being flooded with people who believe it is a "Right" to be provided with everything that the ordinary person has to work hard to provide for themselves.
Many people, however, still do have generous hearts and dispositions, and freely give to charities which is a very good thing. Those in true need should be given a foundation to make their own ways.

I work so that others can have all the time. I give my belongings away when someone has a need. I give money to someone that needs it. I just am picky and choosy with who I give it to. I know that everyone needs something sometimes, and a lot of us have some bad luck from time to time, but I am not going to give to someone that is just too lazy to get it for themselves.

I think most people would work, but probably not the same work they do now. They'd be free to work at something they enjoy or get an education. It would be boring really quick if all you did was watch TV or play video games.
