For a general introduction, I can't recommend Gombrich's 'The Story of Art' highly enough. It cost me about 30 euro (don't know in US dollars or anything, sorry) but it's a bestseller and there's 15-20 editions now. It's wonderful to read and offers a good insight.

Nygirl, there are tons of fantastic art history books. I had 6 or so art history classes, and appreciated the quality of the books I used. I'd be glad to share the names of some of them with you, but I need to know what era, and what country of origin you want books to cover.
