I've read on here that Down Syndrome sufferers usually have a higher IQ than average and they are smarter than what people think. If they are extremely intelligent than why do they have such facial deformities?

Some mental and intellectual disabilities cause facial deformities so that's why I'm asking about the correlation between their high IQ that isn't associated with mental retardation and their facial deformities which have that association.

You got your hair done ! You could be thinking of Asperger people who often have a very high IQ. Downs Syndrome is most often associated with low IQ's and mental disabilities. But not all Downs Syndrome people have a mental disability, have you see the TV show with Corky ? Chris Burke. Some Downs Syndrome people do go on to university.

The Downs syndrome appearance etc is caused by a defective chromosome 21. They actually have an extra chromosome.

Among other things it can be "caused" by maternal age.

Down syndrome (DS) is a condition in which extra genetic material causes delays in the way a child develops, and often leads to mental retardation. It affects 1 in every 800 babies born.

The symptoms of Down syndrome can vary widely from child to child. While some kids with DS need a lot of medical attention, others lead very healthy and independent lives

Normally, at the time of conception a baby inherits genetic information from its parents in the form of 46 chromosomes: 23 from the mother and 23 from the father. In most cases of Down syndrome, however, a child gets an extra chromosome - for a total of 47 chromosomes instead of 46. It's this extra genetic material that causes the physical and cognitive delays associated with DS.

Although no one knows for sure why DS occurs and there's no way to prevent the chromosomal error that causes it, scientists do know that women age 35 and older have a significantly higher risk of having a child with the condition. At age 30, for example, a woman has less than a 1 in 1,000 chance of conceiving a child with DS. Those odds increase to 1 in 400 by age 35. By 42, it jumps to about 1 in 60.

Unfortunately, no most people who suffer from Down Syndrome are not "geniuses". The typical facial deformities associated with all Down Syndrome people are attributed to the fact that they have 3 twenty-first chromosomes (which is why Down Syndrome is often known as Trisomy 21) The fact that they have this extra 21st chromosome alters slightly their gentics concerning their facial features etc. anyways now im rambling, if you want to learn more, i suggest wikipedia or some other type of encyclopedia.

You are getting Down's confused with Autism and especially Asperger's Syndrome which is a form of Autism, it is autistics that have the high IQ's not downs, people with Down's have lower than normal IQ's and their facial deformities are a sign of Downs, hope that this helps

Actually, sadly, the opposite is true. Many people with Down's have an IQ under 75 (but by no means all of them!), but there is some speculation that by having "lower" IQ's, they are more intuitive and are inclined to live on an emotional level, which makes them more receptive to the more positive, emotional aspects those of us who don't have the extra chromosome tend to shut off as means of coping with the world.

They have lower IQ's than normal, but many are trainable and it was not always believed that they they could be taught anything.
