Yes,

Once upon a time in Middle Ages Germany there was a jolly soul who was very rich. He saw the poor children and decided to share the birthday of Christ with them. So every year on Christmas Day he would drive his sled, pulled by reindeer and hand out presents to the poor children of his home village. This custom was looked upon with such kindness and favor and as a beautiful way to celebrate the birth of Jesus that it was adopted and for thinking up the idea the man Nicholas was made into a Saint.

St. Nicholas died a very long time ago and the custom has continued since his death. The idea of Christmas lives in our hearts and souls, but no there is no Santa Clause living at the North Pole who visits every single children in the world, in one night, to deliver presents to all of them. But, his spirit is still alive.

The most important thing about Christmas isn’t the presents you get. Sure they are nice and I am as greedy as the next person, but what is better for your soul is to give presents. I look very hard for the presents I give with the idea for each person in mind and I try to tailor the present to fit them and get them something that the want. By doing this I keep the Spirit of Christmas and St. Nicholas alive. That spirit lives in the idea of Santa Clause, and an idea can never be destroyed, not if it is powerful enough.

When you children are old enough to understand this explanation then they are old enough to be told the secret. They should also be told that it is a secret. The idea of Saint Nicholas is hard to explain, because he lived so long ago, in a different land, at a different time. So the idea of Christmas and gift giving is kept alive in the legend of Santa Clause. Some children are told the idea of Santa, but they are too young to be told the entire history behind the idea. So they believe in Santa Clause, and think he is real. If you think about it what he does is impossible. Reindeer don’t fly, they don’t travel around the world in one night and no single man could deliver presents to every single child in the world. But, back in St. Nick’s time he could drive his reindeer pulled sleigh around the entire village, and give every child a present in one night. Santa Clause is the legend, the idea, only a grander scale. It is based on a real person and a real idea, but it is only an idea.
