Try to go to Victorias Secret or another company or store that has a lingerie section where they will know exactly how to measure you. DO NOT be embarrassed by this... wearing inappropriate sizes can be painful. For a 36A the next cup size would be a 36B, however you may fall between the sizes... Some bra manufacturers have finally found that out and are making half sizes or "barely" sizes. Try one of those. If your actually breasts aren't getting bigger but your chest is (how big around you are) then your next size would be a 38A. The first number is your chest size (think like how big around your pants are... you might wear a 32 or a 34 because that's how many inches around your waist is) and the letter is your actual cup size.

The number is the size around your area underneath your breasts. If you get a 36, it can be adjusted slightly by using the various hooks in the back, but usually only one inch either way....saying that a 36 can be a 35 or a 37.
Cup size is the letter part of the bra tag. A is smallest, B the next size when your boobs grow, C if you are that lucky....LOL.
It goes to double digits (like DD...) when you really gain the milkers.
Manufacturers are not always accurate with their sizings...the best bet is just to try on different ones.
Once you have fastened it, lean forward and shake your boobs into it. And kinda wiggle it around to settle them.
When you find a kind you like...stick with them. I have a drawer full of bras I bought and don't wear. They are just lumpy. I am an A and halfway B, too. I do think Playtex came out with a half size bra. You might look (and don't be afraid to ask) for them.
[Edit] To clarify for Nurse Susan....."Make sure the back of band and front of band are even." I'm sure she means the straps should be over the shoulder evenly...that matters, too. It is your shoulders that are holding up the puppies! And you do need to adjust them first....the manufacturer never knows how low your goodies jingle! Hee hee. Plan for some time in the fitting room, and take your time there, too. It is hard, I know. You are in a strange place half naked! That is why I have a drawer full I do not wear!

1] measure snugly, directly under your bust. Add 5 inches. This is your band size.
2] measure around fullest part of bust. Subtract band size from it. The difference is your cup size.
1" = A
2" = B
3" = C
The next cup size should be 36B if breasts are bigger; or 38A if chest is bigger [ yes, they make it - it's just harder to find.]
Make sure back of bra band is even with front bra band.
Make sure straps are adjusted properly.
Go to a store with large selection of bras, and try on different styles of bras in those sizes.
Bring as many as they let you into dressing room.
Mark the ones that fit by folding in half on the hanger so you don't get them mixed up.

Measure around your chest, under your breasts and then add 4 inches to that and that's your band size. For example, if you get 32 inches, you would add 4 inches to get 36. Then measure around your breasts at the nipple. If it's one inch more than the band, you're an A. If it's 2, you're a B and so on. I think there is a poster in every fitting room I've ever seen about how this works. You can also always ask a female sales clerk to help you out. Or, ask your mom!

36b would be your next size as long as its only your boobs growing. Although fit is different with different brands. I alternate from 36 to 40 C.I Usually just go for the larger because I can always use the tightest clasp and be comfortable.
