Neither. Have realistic expectations. Trust until given a reason not to, but realize everyone will disappoint you from time to time, then forgive and move on.

To answer the first part...no. Being suspicious won't avoid devastation. It'll just make you expect it every time you turn a corner. For example, simply being suspicious won't stop a tornado from killing your family, or (more realistically) keep your girlfriend from making out with someone else (of course if you're too suspicious then it might prevent you from having a girlfriend in the first place.) It also prevents you from having close friends, as suspicion will cause you to not trust them.
For the second part, it all depends on your definition of innocent. And liveable. Sorry.

Well...being suspicious is not going to help you avoid devestation. If you "suspect" that your girlfriend is cheating on you...but do nothing...then devestation will still come. It's acting upon your suspicions that will help you avoid devestation...but if you are wrong...then that cause trouble.
As to, what I believe is your other question, being innocent may not make a difference in the "livability" of your life. It doesn't make that much sense...but good question though. ^_^

Being suspicious is a dark, solitary existence. Surround yourself with only those that you can trust. If you can trust no one you know, GET NEW FRIENDS and develope integrity yourself so that you attract friends who can give and receive trust. Being innocent is being in ignorance. You must suffer disillusion in order to know where to seek and recognize the trustworthy. Where there is not trust or truth there can be no true friendship or love or security. You can't be a "player" and a user and a cheat and expect to have anyone "covering your back"...EVER. You must GIVE unconditionally to GET unconditionally.

Being suspicious robs any individual of joy.
Devastation is a combination of perception and specific acts by specific people.
In the effort to avoid being hurt, the individual will avoid joy as they can also experience hurt. Learning to cope with hurt (or learning its solution) allows the individual to return to experiencing pleasure in life.
Suspicion is -- trust no one.
