I would ask a good friend already using tampons to walk you through it. She can be on the other side of the bathroom door. Don't feel bad but it helped me. :)

I have the most problems when there is not much blood coming out and its kind of dry. since the tampon is cotton it rubs against the dry wall and stops it from moving. Try it at a time when there is blood coming out or some has just come out. Also, make sure you are using tampons with applicators, this may help. Keep your angle right (should be tilted only slightly towards your back as you go into the vagina), and just push. if it doesnt hurt keep pushing and try moving it at slightly different angles. It works best for me when im standing up with legs apart and squatting a little bit.

Honestly I couldnt start wearing them until I was sexually active. I'm not telling you to go have sex just letting you know its normal.
I thought that I was too tense too, honestly I was too small. It took some work actually 'stretching' myself so i could have sex for the first time and after that i could wear the smaller 'teen' tampons. I can still only wear smaller tampons and not the maxis but it's better.
Don't get too discouraged if it just isnt working, try to buy the 'teen' sized ones and use the light days ones.

Tensing up makes it nearly impossible to insert the tampon.
Pay attention to what size tampon you are using. Maybe start off with the tampax slender for teens. They are smaller. You might have to change them more often, depending on your flow, but at least it will help you in learning how to insert them.
Read this page, it gives step by step, easy to follow directions for inserting a tampon. It also gives some tips for extra help. You'll get the hang of it in a very short time.
