So I use to live with this guy who was my roomate, but we had a major fight and he illegal evicted me. So I wasn't able to change my address until I found a solid place to stay, so one of my friends had contacted me telling me he had opened up all my mail and sent it through a paper shredder. When I called him, he denied it all and said he sent it back, so I checked the post office and they don't have anything. Is there anything I can do about it, cuz he opened my credit card bills and bank statements and even my cousins wedding invintation. I also have a witness to it. What can i do?

I don't know if there's civil action here but you can report him to the federal agents for tampering with your mail. Prove to them that he had your mail. shredded it and he can be charged under federal law.

You have two issues here, criminal and civil. If what you say is true, he has committed a crime. It is illegal for him to open mail not addressed to him. This is something the postal service would deal with, but it sounds like it would be difficult to prove.
For you to sue him (a civil matter), you would need to prove that you were harmed in some manner. Since you weren't going to get any of this mail even if he returned it to the post office, you will have a hard time showing damages.
You are probably better off changing all of your critical information in case he tries to use it, notify the credit bureaus, and find better roommates.

Opening up some ones mail is a federal offense, see if you can ask the post office personnel about that one. Sorry i have no more details for you. All i know is that some one can go to jail, and you have a witness.

Unfortunately, it's a hard thing to prove. It's his word against yours. But tell the postmaster and be sure you get your address forwarding filled out to prevent any more mail fro,m going to his place. Call the places you know about and have them issue you new billing. Also, I would change my credit card numbers and bank info also started ina new account. bettyk

You contact a United State Postal Investigator. You can find it online or call and ask your local postal service. Sad to say, but since the mail was going to his house, he can't say he "stole" it. As for opening it, you would need proof.

Call the post office. This is a federal crime they will direct you to the right people. If you have a witness he is in big trouble.

You need to have proof that he opened and destroyed mail that wasn't his property. If the friend who told you this was willing to write a statement supporting it/testify to the facts in court, then yes, you can sue him for opening your mail.

Take him for jail, not money. Ask for him to apologize, though. I would change your social security, bank, everything, though.
