2(x - 3) = 36
Remove brackets
2x - 6 = 36
Add 6 to both sides
2x = 36 + 6
2x = 42
x = 21

Multiple methods
One method
Hint 1: always do the opposite operation:
multiplication and divison are opposites
addition and subtraction are opposites
Hint 2: order is important for multiple step equations
1st: multiply or divide
2nd: add or subtract
2(x - 3) = 36
÷2 = ÷2
-------------------
x – 3 = 18
+ 3 = + 3
-------------------
x = 21

Hope this is right. It's been awhile since I've done algebra.
2(x-3)=36
2x-6 =36
2x=36 +6=42
2x=42
x=21

x=21
first you want to distribute the 2..distributing would be done by multiplying the numbers in the parentheses... so you multiply 2 times x and 2 times -3 this would make the equation read 2x-6=36...then you want to isolate the x term...so you want to add 6 to both sides..the equation would then read 2x=42 the reason you have to add 6 to both sides is because whatever you do to one side you have to do to the other in order to keep it balanced...next you want to divide by 2 on both sides to isolate x... This will lead you with x equaling 21... i hope this helped
2(x-3)=36
distribute the 2...
2x-6=36
add 6 to both sides...
2x=42 the 6 on the left cancels out because -6+ 6 = 0
then you divide by 2 on both sides...
x=21
