because aside from the war and health care, part of our taxes go toward the education fund... which is where we get federal grant money from.

besides, the federal govt has an investment in the education of it's constituents. if it simply sat on it's funds and let students say no to an education due to prices, our country would soon become just a little better than a third world nation. there would be no professionals because it's to expensive to get your degree.

it's not about being lazy, freeloading, or irresponsible. it's about the government investing in the future of it's people.

Because they believe that the community as a whole benefits from a person gaining a university education. For example, teachers and nurses are not especially well paid, but they provide a valuable service to the whole community. Governments are investing in the whole community when they provide financial assitance to students undertaking this kind of education.

because some people are selfish and take no responsibility for themselves.

These are the same poeple that trip and fall, then blame a shadow on the ground.

The only time the gov't should fund someone's education is in the form of grants, scholorships or loans for low income people. (such as myself). :0)

Well, some people do believe that someone else should pay for everything for them, but more importantly, if the government paid for higher education, it wouldn't be preferentially open to those people who have money, but everyone who was qualified, regardless of family income, could get an equal education.
