It has to do with fear and hatred. They believed that Jews were the reason why they had a country that was war torn and in poverty from world war 1. They were taught from a young age this belief and saw it is a way to fix their country. They also feared standing up to anyone because then they might have been killed too. Hitler was an evil man but very charismatic and his people saw him as a way out of the poverty. He also kept what he was doing hidden for a while and by the time it came out it was fear that kept some of the people silent.

It is because of the way a person is raised. A human cannot have a moral sense if they do not know what it is. And if they were raised that way, then the result of the person is obvious. But some people have been threatened, and they would do anything to save themselves from a threat.

It's part of the power of authority and propaganda. Most went home to their wives and kids, churches (catholic mostly), etc... and slept very well at night.

They weren't "responsible" because it was the jews fault - and the decision had been made by someone else.

Unfortunately the kinds of people who are susceptible to these influences are common in the GOP.
