(x - 8)/4 + 1 = 3x/4
~multiply both sides by 4
x - 8 + 4 = 3x
~collect x on one side
-4 = 2x
~divide by 2
x = -2

All terms except the constant are over 4, so convert the constant (1) to 4/4.
Then you have (x-8+4)/4 = 3x /4
Multiply both sides by 4 to get x-4=3x
Solve for x: x=-2
