Shakespeare said there is nothing new under the sun, and if he couldn't be sure he was completely original, I'd say you don't have much of a chance either.

Just make sure you've written it yourself. Read widely so you know what other people have done, and you can try and do something different. Then, show your finished work to someone who has read widely in your genre/type of story. They can tell you if its been done before.

If you write it yourself, I think you'll find that some elements are the same as something else, but in general, things will be different from anybody else's story. Isn't that amazing? That one story can be told so many different ways? I find that amazing.

You have to check thought the Library of Congress and you pay a small fee to have your story copyrighted. They will search it for you and give you a copyright. The fee was 10 dollars 20 years ago.
