It's because you aren't supplying an explanation. Instead tell them you gave up on it when it didn't taste good to you anymore. People jump to conclusions and they always seem to think the worse. Head them off with a short disarming statement and remove all doubt.

I'm not sure why anyone would assume that you are recovering from alcoholism. I know plenty of people that don't drink, and I happen to be one of them. I have kidney issues and I just can't take it, so I don't do it. Perhaps because I don't really drink any alcohol, I guess that makes me more toward your side of thinking.
Who cares what people think anyway? Your opinion is the only one that matters right?

I never drink either, I never liked the taste of alcohole, no one has ever said to me what people say to you I think it's rude of them. You do not have to prove to them that you arn't a recovering alcoholic, if they don't believe you then that's just their problem. Just think about all the health benefits of not drinking and look that those idiots who assume otherwise, at least you won't have liver failure or broken capillaries around your nose, that comes with drinking. You at least will live longer than they wil. You have the last laugh.

Same thing happens to me all the time. I explain I do not want to drink and That is my choice. If pushed I tell them that I save all the money I use to spend on alcohol and use it once a year to go on a cruse and I prefer this over drinking. This usually quiets them down. Why they assume, I don't know

I have no clue as to why a lot of folks just assume or even rude to think such a thing. If you say you don't do drugs they don't assume that your a recovering addict! So I'd just comment on that one! LOL See their reactions! LOL
I how ever am not ashamed that I am a recovering addict. October will give me 32 years! That I am proud of!

I guess recovering alcoholics are more common than people who just choose not to drink. to heck with the ones that don`t believe you, you don`t owe anyone an explanation.

i don't drink anymore, i made this decision about a month ago. my grandma was in the hospital and the doctor said that we needed to start thinking of taking her off life support because she was not responding and i went in her room and cried on my grandma's chest and i started praying to
God to keep her alive and if he did this for me i would stop drinking and i knew it was something that my grandma didn't really like me doing anyway so i knew i had to do it, and then later that night the nurse came in and asked me if i wanted to see her and i said yes and she said, "look ur granddaughter is here to see u" and she opened her eyes and has been recovering since, so this is why i gave up drinking and all my friends like to tease me and tell me that i will give in one day but as long as God has listened to me i will keep my part of the bargain.

Sure is funny who people make assumptions! I have not drank since high school and I've been getting the same thing for over 30 years. They figure I'm a drunk or a religous nut.

I don't assume. I merely accept the statement as a choice you've made and don't try to read anything into it regarding why.

Usually when I say I don't drink, they ask if I'm super-religious. It's a no-win question.
