Everywhere I look I see religion, and it makes me mad! I'm the only atheist in my family, and they're always trying to make me go to church and stuff, and no one gets my point. I keep telling them how religion isn't true, and that it's an explanation of things that when religion was created, we did not know. The thing is that we know that stuff now (except what happens after death), so people don't need to be as serious about it all! People were mad at my school because they taught Darwin's Theory of Evolution rather than creationism. It's so stupid, People can believe what they want they want, but to judge religion over science, is a very stupid argument. Yet right on the dollar bill, "In God We Trust". I just don't see why it has to be so advertised and shoved down people's thoughts. So my question is: Why do people take it so seriously?

To answer Nerys, it's religion all together. Most of my family is Christian, but my brother is actually a Bhuddist, but they have nothing against him because he believes in something. They just don't like that I don't believe anything about any religion. But Christianity is most advertised, so even though I don't believe in anything, it's mostly Christianity just because they have to announce it to everyone all the time.

maybe you should move to Cuba. We believe in freedom of religon here. you have a right to believe what you want but so do I. You don't have to say the pledge if you dont want to but dont tell me I can't. You don't like that our money says what it says, Be thank full your allowed to feel the way you do openly and not made to wear a burka and cover your face. if your family is cramming religon down your throat that is a Family problem not the rest of the countries take it up with them.

Im sure that your family just wants "whats best for you" and if that is trying to get you to go to church, then thats what theyll try and do. On the other hand, I do see your point, but at the same time theyre trying to get you to go to church, are you trying to push your beliefs on them? Just a point even if you are or arent...

Also, I think its stupid for anyone to get mad about being taught anything in school, whether its Darwanism or creationism...as long as the teacher doesnt make a clear stance on what side of the 'opinion fence' theyre on and as long as its taught as a subject and not as a true fact...nobody should gripe about being taught anything in school and they should just take it in as being more knowledgable about something rather than someone trying to force an opinion on them.

And last but not least, the reason why "In God We Trust" is on the back of the bill is because you need to look back to when they decided to put it on there...it was a common thing for the majority of Americans and English people to be relgious and so forth.

So all in all....my thing is, youre living in a society that is becoming more open to different relgious ideals...but at the same time, people are very strong in what they do believe...so just believe what you want to believe, and if you dont want something shoved down your throat, then dont do it to other people. I have religious beliefs and I dont like to pronounce them to the world because there are a lot of judgemental people out there. I understand, but the quieter you keep about it, the greater chance theyll keep their quiet about theirs.

So: You are not complaining about "religion", only "Christianity"! Darwinism is a religion: it is the BELIEF of people who have revolted against God. Communism is a religion; it likewise is a belief of people who have revolted against God.
You said you see (signs of) religion everywhere. In that, you are correct. What are the months of the year? What are the days of the week? How about electricity, goodbye, or just about any thing else you can think of?
Until humans began to think they knew more than God, most people were very religious; devoutly religious. That is why you see it every where. If one person is "male" and another is "female", you are expressing religion!
And yo are wrong to say someone is cramming religion down your throat. To say that proves you have no knowledge whatsoever of religion. Religion, whether the Great Mother Goddess Buddahism, whatever, is based upon BELIEF. If you don't BELIEVE, no one can upset your beliefs.

I understand, honey. Look at these moronic answers from people who live in delusion. Stay strong, but do not confront your family until you are of majority. Then you can live your life by the evidence and not some Bronze age belief system.
You might want to try some other part of the country, as your school mates being mad because creationism was not taught is rather indicative of where you are living. I live in the Bay Area. We have our own brand of nutty people here, but the theory of evolution by natural selection is taught in the schools here. I had not realized that some parts of the country were getting that bad.

Went to your profile. Did not know that Michigan was that bad off. Do you live in the country?

Why are you shoving atheism down your parent's throats? You need to be tolerant and respective towards their beliefs and they'll be respective about yours. How do you know there isn't a god? How do we know there is even a god at all? No one knows. No one. Whether you follow a religion or you're an atheist, you cannot prove or disprove god. We will never know. Religion is just a serious subject to people, so if people find out that you disagree with them or start an argument, they're going to throw a fit and shove their beliefs at your face.

To me, religion is ones own inner beliefs. We all have the right to believe from the inside, and shouldn't be persuaded by anyone elses belief, because having your own beliefs is what makes you an individual. Don't listen to what anyone else tells you. They are only telling you and trying to control your mind by getting you to believe what they believe in, and that makes you a controlled individual. I'd hate to see what the world would be like if everyone shut up and kept there beliefs to themselves for just an hour. I'm guessing PEACEFUL.

What worries me is that types like you cling to a totally debunked theory which Darwin himself admitted to as being "not very likely defensible in the long term". Point of fact: there is more SUBSTANTIAL evidence to support the age of the earth as being about 6,000 years old instead of "BILLIONS AND BILLIONS!!" For instance, facts point to the creation of the Grand Canyon as having taken about a half hour to 45 minutes to wash out. Now cover your ears and scream at the top of your lungs, because YOUR belief system, yea, your RELIGION, is being challenged and decimated within the halls of academia as we "speak"; and what terrifies you the most is: what if we're RIGHT? You would then be forced to come to terms with a Creator that demands accountibility and WILL be there when you look at HIM and tell him He doesn't exist! THAT'S what you should be worrying about- but you won't, until the matter is no longer in your hands, and your eternal fate is......but don't worry....its all just a fable, made up stories by feeble minded descendants of monkeys ...........right???? RIGHT???????

We all have different belief systems, and take our individual beliefs seriously.

Just as you take your belief [that you're an atheist & that religion isn't true] seriously.

Some overdo it, maybe because they're bible bashers. They think that "spreading the word" equates to shoving their bibles down people's throats.

It's the same as that pack of anti-abortionists that murdered that Doctor & his assistant - their [misled] beliefs were so strong it led to murder.

We selectively choose what information we absorb, so I suggest just ignore what you don't want to acknowledge, but accept that others have the right to their own beliefs.

I kind of agree with you about people being so crazy about religion. However I dissagree with you about God. He has to exist there is no other explaination and don't say evolution because that is nothing but crap. believe me it's impossible. God must exist. I do understand what you are saying though.

Is it really religion in general that you're against, or just Christianity?
