Not steps backward or forward.
The class difference has become more pronounced. The US has never had a class system but one does seem to be developing. Doesn't have a thing to do with race or wealth or religion. People want to belong to a family, have security of a gang, feel there are people 'on their side' for protection. In order to belong to one of those groups, one must agree with the principles of the group; accept the beliefs of others in the group and be acknowledged by the group.

Society has been taking steps backwards since the late '50s, early '60s. I do believe this process is accelerating. A lot of it has to do with increasing urbanization; people don't know their neighbors, don't want to know them, are afraid to become involved. This is making people strangers and hostile.
