People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Walter Mondale’s Op-Ed piece (7/30) complaining about Vice President Cheney is self-serving at best. Cheney is no worst then he was back then when he was the VP of the Carter administration. Let’s not forget that the economy during his term in office suffered from staggering 14 percent interest rates, saw the down sizing of our military and intelligence agencies to the point of ineffectiveness, which culminated in the feeble attempt to rescue our Iranian embassy diplomats who where consequently held and humiliated for 444 days. Carter’s lack of action and resolve at the time was the beginning of Iran’s disrespect for the USA now. It was a very depressing time for everyone. After his four years as VP, Mondale’s political career sank like a rock and never recovered. In my view, Mondale has little room to criticizing anyone.

All your yammer about Mondale is worthless as Mondale had no control anything you mentioned, like most vice presidents he had little if any say in policy. In addition, how is anything you mentioned an example of being self-serving? (oh and since you all are kings of the nothing that happens in the first four years is the president's fault, the downsizing bit is clap trap. The military screwed up rescue, not some imaginary downsizing)

Iran's disrespect for us is firmly based in our helping to overthrow their elected government and install the Shah. What a surprise they end up hating the people who train their torturers.

Cheney on the other hand did have direct control over setting energy policy. He proceeded to pad the legislation with a vast number of favors for his friends and former business partners. Seems to be "self serving" to me, given the revolving door of government these days.

Just one example.

It is quite shocking that you think that anyone is as horrible, as evil, or as bad for the country as Cheney. For you to compare Mondale with Cheney makes me question your judgment. Sorry, but I have to disagree with you on this one.
