Simple answer. NO. If you have a USB port on your laptop, and your cable modem is active. Your service provider has your desktop on that modem. If you want to access the internet using your laptop and desktop, you should look at getting a wireless router. This way the internet provider will have the router address and you can add as many laptops using the router as your want.

If you just have the laptop now, hook it up to the modem and call your provider, they can talk you through it to use your laptop. But you have to this each time you change computers.

A wireless router is the best way to go.

When you set up your cable modem, you have a choice between USB or Ethernet. If you only have one computer, then USB might be for you. But if you want a router for wireless, or establish a network, then use ethernet. Almost every computer already has an ethernet connection that already works. No drivers are necessary... just plug it in with an Ethernet cable. So you see, the USB option is quite limited. But your cable modem did come with a disk if you wanted to switch over to use USB. (You can't use BOTH USB and Ethernet at the same time).

Good luck and Happy Computing!

If you want to go wireless, make sure you have a wireless router and just plug the ethernet cable(yellow) into the router and your laptop then insert the CD you received. Once you have established connection, you can remove ethernet cable and use wireless connection.
ps. you must have your network key inserted.

on the modem maker's website, look up the model number and see what they say

btw, run Windows Upgrade before you do anything ... you want your o/s to be newer than the hardware you are trying to connect.
