I'm planning to stay up for about three-four days straight, as part of a self-organized study on sleep depravity and hallucinations. What, if any, have any of you experienced during sleep depravity...and how long can you go without sleep without getting too crazy?

I'm a psychology major. I'm wanting to learn more about how the brain works when deprived of sleep. Mainly I'm interested in sleep disorders

I've done 72 hours during Gulf War #1 while stationed at the Straights of Hormuz.

Didn't notice much difference except I was less tolerant of the bullshit from superiors.

When I did finally get to sleep, it was for 20 hours straight. Waking up completely disoriented was worse than going without the sleep.

As for how long..there was a story about a DJ who did like...8 or 9 days while on air (maybe less, maybe more)..he was never the same afterwards...

The brain needs sleep. Simple as that.

If you really want to gain some understanding of this, it would be more productive under a real psych study--filmed and with trained experimentors and in a controlled environment. Frankly, I don't think that a person can will himself to stay awake for that period of time. I hope you're not going to use drugs to do it--that would contaminate your "findings".
