In the opening chapter, the author is describing the mood of the people before the incident. The author is telling us that the people felt safe and secure despite the warning signs from Mars that might have led us to believe there was life on other planets. But we were oblivious to these signals, thus the abrupt occurrences. The atmosphere of the setting in the first chapter is very peaceful because only a few people expected and knew that something was going on. One of the sentences that contribute to the mood of the chapter is; “and he scoffed at the vulgar idea of its having inhabitants who were signaling us.” What I was thinking at this point in the novel is that we have creatures on our planet that can live without the things we can. Some can live without sun, others without air. How could they of known for sure that it isn’t possible for a type of creature that we hadn’t discovered yet that could live without both?

Another phrase that contributes is; “Yet the next day there was nothing of this in the papers except a little note in the Daily Telegraph, and the world went in ignorance of one of the gravest dangers that ever threatened the human race.” This phrase hits me especially because this was a clear and present warning and not one person took it seriously. One more phrase that is contributing is; “My wife pointed out to me the brightness of the red, green, and yellow signal lights hanging in a framework against the sky. It seemed so safe and tranquil.” The thought running through my mind at this time was; didn’t anybody question anything back then? Ever? Did they just go along living life the way they were told, no questions asked? And the last sentence that contributes to the mood of the opening chapter would be; “It has air and water and all that is necessary for the support of animated existence.”

The obvious thought in my head at this moment was; “so why weren’t they suspecting or even acknowledging what was on its way from Mars? If life was possible, then why weren’t they asking any questions? If I saw green, red and yellow lights in the sky, I know that I would be asking a lot of questions.” Based on the mood of the opening chapter, I predict that humans will be surprised and horrified to find out that there are life forms living on planets besides Earth.
