The answer is a big NO!, by philosophical reason the statement is universal, to be a scientist is not to be really genius or to have a very high IQ, its the interest and curiosity of a person that made him one, Thomas Alba Edison is a scientist, and considered to be greatest inventor of all times, yet he has no very good educational background...You dont need to be doctorate to be one, because many of these famous scientists who excelled even they were just the one explore the ocean of truth this nature offers to us.
if you are going to think further, you can conclude, that we are classified into two, either a philosopher or scientist. Philosopher if we want to learn a little from different fields of truth, and scientist if we learn more and discover more to just specific field.
You are unique in anyway, that you can be scientist or philosopher...Just live your principle and explore the things that catch your interest, and in the end, you'll be amazed, you will be one of those famous, next generation will remember

Scientist are not necessary geniuses and you shouldn't let that intimidation deters you from your interests. Scientist spend their entire life studying the area that interest them...... I would think that they are more than passionates about their studying topic, otherwise their entire research career wouldn't be on that...... Not every experiments are successful, even if it span for years. However, if a small lab error lead to important discovery, you'll be considered a genius. This is my 4th years as a biology major, and all the researching professors I have, all seem to be aiming to discover something new and be awarded a noble prize. There are so many questions that need answer in science through research =)

Probably, but so what? Would you refuse to go into music if you couldn't be a superstar? Just work to find out what's best for you. If it's science, go for it! The scientists you can name aren't the only ones who make a contribution to society.

Well here is something I found out recently about James Watson, one of the discoverers of DNA. In his book, " DNA. The Secret of Life ", he listed his IQ as 122. This is not stellar and shows you do not need to be a genius to do science. I know I am not a genius and I do science.
