Has anyone out there had an experience with the elderly and c. difficile infection? My mom was recently on a pretty intense course of iv antibiotics and I'd like to know what to watch out for. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It's nasty stuff. It can quickly spread through a nursing home if proper sterile technique isn't followed. Watch for fever and pain when the infection site is touched. Be very careful to wash hands well before and after touching. This is often called "C diff" in nursing circles. It can get started due to lack of repositioning in bed or sitting without moving, as I recall. These are called "bedsores."

C Diff is in stool. It occurs because the antibiotic kills the normal flora in the bowels and lets c diff take over. The stool is usually diarrhea and very foul smelling. I always recommend that people on antibiotics eat yogurt during the course because it replaces the normal flora. It can be fatal in the elderly because of dehydration. Fluids are very important and if the stool is extremely loose go on a clear liquid diet no caffeine cause that can make it worse. Good luck

After taking antibiotics there is a capsule you can buy that restores natural bacteria, called Acidophilus. Its called a "Probiotic" and sold over the counter, no script needed

It works really well and is recommended by doctors and pharmacists here.

Ask your pharmacist about it.
