That is very sad, especially for him to die on the same day as Bergman. I really enjoyed his english language films of the 60s and 70s, starting with Blow Up. I saw a revival of The Passenger recently and it was fascinating, especially the final continuous tracking shot.

However, his legacy will probably be more his pioneering work in the Italian 'new wave' or realist films of the 50s. Together with film makers like Da Sica and Fellini, he helped establish the modern Italian industry.
