I am carving a giraffe for my daughter. It is fairly large so I had to use several peices of wood.

What is the best way to hide the joints? Sanding does not seem to work well.

Sand, then take your sanding 'dust', mix it with wood glue, and fill in the cracks. Use a dull knife to shove it in good, and then when dry, sand again...it should turn out nice and smooth.
Learned this from my grandpa.
