I don't think it came from Earth as the people above me believe.First of all if it had came from Earth from the result of a massive impact then the Earth and the moon would have almost the same elemental make up.truth is it does not.Earth is made of rock and iron primarily. The moon is absent of iron. And is made up with the materials usually found in common asteroids.Another problem with this theory is if a Mars sized object hit the Earth then where did it go?If the gravitational Field of the sun is strong enough to hold Earth and the other 7 planets(8 if you count Pluto)then Certainly it is strong enough to capture another Mars sized planet.More than likely the Earth captured a huge asteroid in its earlier days and that's it.........

The moon was formed around the same time as the Earth (around 4.6 billion years ago) when a large object (about the size of Mars) struck the Earth and blasted a large amount of mass into orbit. The debris gathered together over time to form the moon.

If you are asking where did the moon come
from, well it came in a package deal when all
the rest of the universe was created. Some
say all of that was from a big bang. What
ever you want to believe, but I have my on
version of what happened. Everything out
there in the universe is so perfect that it's
hard for me to believe it all started from an
explosion.

The theory says a Mars sized object collided with Earth billions of years ago and the debris, of both the Mars size object and the shattered Earth, formed the Moon.

The moon probably formed when the young earth was hit by a massive body.

I thought that an asteroid hit the earth and a chunk broke and the gravity and other forces made the Earth round again. But i think it was part of Earth, i saw it on a video in 6th grade.

Like the others before me, the giant impact theory is the popular theory today. Through computer modelling they were able to calculate senarios that would support this theory. But i still think its one of those things that requires seeing to be believing :)
