Mostly trailers and some awesome ones at that if the movie is being made in the US. I saw a tour of 2 trailers- 1 created for Will Smith which cost $ 1 million and Robert DeNiro which was equipped with a custom made screening room on a second level which cost $1.5 million to make.
If there are overseas locations, they usually rent homes for them or take over floors of hotels but preferably the houses.

It depends on how long the actor is going to be in that one place filming. If it is going to be a long time, the actor may rent an apartment. If it isn't going to be so long, they will probably stay in a hotel. For some actors there are times in their life when they don't even have a home and they just drive around looking for work and staying different places every week or night.

That is the least of their troubles, they can pretty much stay anywhere, they can buy a hotel if they want to.

I think a little of both, I read in something that when the Jolie-Pitts were filming somewhere they rented a house, I think it kids depends on the star and what they are comfortable with.

some stay on trailers in more remote locations.

it depends, if it's in another country or someplace far away they stay in hotels, villas, condos, ect.

If they are important enough they get their own trailer/mobile home.
