oputz: yes 'love is a stranger' was one of the most underappreciated songs of the 1980s, and one of the best. i agree wholeheartedly.

"Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles.

I think we HAVE to mention it. Afterall, it was the very first video played on MTV and it pretty much summed up the changes that were about to take place in the music industry..... with technology.... with culture!!

Well before I read everyone else's answers, I had two thoughts...
1st - Safety Dance, just because - 80's, videos were still a new concept, and sometimes what would be in the video would seem to have very little to do with the actual song, and some - appeared that they went for as far an artistic stretch as they could muster... and then again when I think of this video, it makes me smile as it was quite whimsical, making me feeling light-hearted and energetic at the same time!

And in a similar light 2nd choice "99 Luftballons" felt powerful, thoughtful and energetic as well. The end of the Cold War, and still a world scarred by the battles over the ages... will there be anything left of us... as the last red ballon floats away...

But then I read my fellow answerers and can admit "Take on Me" by Aha was a good pick for the 'quint' vid.

Wish Mtv or Vh1 would have an all 80's video weekend or something, we could certainly use a break from all the "unreal" reality programming they are bombarding us with...
Nevermind that I was up very late watching "When Star Wars ruled the World"...Man those guys have aged!!

I don't know much about 1980's music, so I'm sorry I can't contribute much. On your list I agree with Bruce Springsteen, U2, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, and Whitney Housten. Just because I have heard a lot about them. Janet Jackson? Eh. Mainly I answered because I completely agree with ck1 on Journey. Where are they???!! Again sorry, I didn't really answer your question, but it is a great one. Star for you! :)

Yeah, yeah, yeah... No, not an 80s band (it was a Beattles song though...), I am just agreeing that "Take on Me" certainly was very symptomatic for the 80s. BUT there were those of us who listened to those poppy plastic bands and then those of us who preferred more eclectic and artistic - not to mention more INTELLIGENT - music. So, although I appreciate the influence of Duran Duran and the Norwegian pop band "M-mh" my entry would have to be Euryhtmics with "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OufZbzsUtIo&mode=related&search=) and "Here comes the Rain Again" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFtmQTJA5ZQ&mode=related&search=).

One of the most memorable ones for me was "You Might Think " by the Cars. I'll never forget how Rick Ocasek turned into a flying bug and followed that girl everywhere. Gotta Love it. The video was crazy, campy, and flighty like most of the stuff from the mid 80's.

don't forget about me, breakfast club
Because there was an array of personality and an array of emotion poured into the movie as well as the song. And the video did a good job depicting the movie. It shows the fashions of the different types of people at that time. And how it is similar today.

I can't remember the name of the song, but it's the video where the singers go back and forth from being real to animated. It represents how quickly the world is changing and how technologically advanced we were becoming.
