is it true that crime has skyrocketed, especially armed robbery and other crimes in which guns have been used?

There was a letter circulating on the Internet, ostensibly from an Australian policeman, which gave some scary statistics about greatly increased crime down under. I just wanted to check this out.

No and we haven't had any school massacres or any others either.
Guns aren't banned in Australia we just have strict procedures(like not letting a man with a mental history buy a gun) to get a license and we don't allow the selling of assault rifles why you need one I don't know.
The only reason crime has risen is because of the use of Chrystal meth and other drugs and I don't think we are the only country in the world with that problem
See we also have very strict immigration laws the thing I find ironical the people that agree with those don't agree with our gun laws.

No. It is not true.

I suspect that accurate information is the last thing you want, but have a look here. http://www.bocsar.nsw.gov.au/
