I'm thinking that the best way to introduce someone to the depth of the Monkees catalogue is to play some of the later songs that weren't associated with the TV show. I think "As We Go Along" and "Listen To The Band" are great "persuasion" songs. Another one that was used on the show but is excellent (IMHO) is "Door Into Summer." The live version of "Circle Sky" kicks *** as does the live version of (I'm Not Your) Steppin Stone!

Are you familiar with the Missing Links CDs? If so, try "All Of Your Toys," "Come On In," and "Time and Time Again."

I've been a Monkees fan since 1966, and I'll die one. It never occurred to me to turn my nose up because they didn't play every instrument on every record that was released. The music was (and is) too much fun and too good!

In my humble opinion and that's the only kind I have, I'd repeat most of the answers already given along with The Porpoise Song and Can You Dig It, both from Head.
I think I'm A Believer is one of the greatest songs ever and while the Shrek version is cute, nobody can sing that song like Micky.

Your question has an oxymoron quality, but those penned by Michael Nesmith. Two that come to mind:
