I tried to start my computer this morning but the windows won't start and give the following message on the monitor.

" Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt.
\windows\system32\config\...
you can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using this original CD-ROM
Select "r" at the first screen to start repair"

Then I did what it tells to do. Inserted the windows set up CD and started the repair. But when it started, a message jumps out and reads
"Which Windows installation would you like to log into"
and you can only type one letter. What should I type to continue the repairing process?

Thank you.

Roadman has actually supplied the correct answer here.
Place your XP cd in the drive shut the computer down restart it and make sure that it is booting from CDrom, First screen press enter ( ie you wish to install xp ) second screen press F8 to accept the agreement, third screen after windows has detected previous versions of windows it is here that you can choose R for repair now all that you do is to follow the screen prompts as though you were doing a fresh installation.

start over and wait until you get the second screen that gives the opportunity to do a repair. leave the windows CD in the drive, but when you reboot boot from the hard drive and it will rewrite the windows files.

There should be a list of Windows Installations that you can choose from, each installation preceded by a letter or number.

Ex:

1. Windows 2000
2. Windows XP
A. Windows 98

or something to that effect.

If you want Windows 2000, press 1. Windows 98, press A.

Good luck.

It should be showing you the options. Most likely, it will be whichever one is installed at C:\Windows.
