Nope, they can wear anything they like in my experience. I am a CNA, and nurses usually wear scrubs. The only reason I have against it is that you can't distinguish a nurse from a CNA, caregiver, sitter, or phlebotomist, or anyone else who deals in the health care profession. I think my nurse manager more professional with a lab coat or a white top on and white shoes. I've been called nurse and held responsible for many things that only an RN or LPN could deal with, just because I am wearing scrubs.

The nurses in the local hospital here wear colored scrubs.

I am a nurse and have had 3 different hospital jobs. I have never had a rule about what colors to wear or not wear. It is nice to be able to wear something new everyday, but some people say they would like us to go back to white so they know who is the nurse, doctor, aide and so on.

I am guessing from the way you worded that you do know they have colored scrubs and I can't remember the last time I saw a nurse wearing white.
It's kind of like saying "do covered wagons still have to carry a rifle to ward off hostile Indians and robbers."

no. Nurses originally wore white to signify cleanliness.
It was also necessary to wear a hat and the style of hat marked where one had studied. Each nursing school had their special hat style. Now we know more about bacteria and germs and know colors can be clean too.
I like more color in the health care field. I think it makes people who are ill feel better or more at ease in the situation they are in. Styles change with time and hats are no longer fashionable, unless you are the queen of England.

My daughters are both nurses and they wonderfully colored uniforms and they are so much more cheerful than plain white or plain colored scrubs.

I'm a nurse and we don't wear white! Being on a ward, we don't wear scrubs either. My uniform is navy blue and light blue :)

No, nowadays they wear all colors of the rainbow. All kinds of colorful printed, rather cheesy looking scrubs!

No they do not always have to wear white, it depends on who you work for. At Holmes here in Florida the nurses are asked to wear white, so patients can tell them apart from the techs and medics.
