Oh Jesus STOP! STOP! STOP! Don't listen to your friend read the instructions that can with the filter. If you've lost/thrown them away go to the K and N site and read how to properly use the darn thing before you destroy it.

Basically the K&N filters are reuseable filters not like regular paper filters. The regular paper filter pores or holes are very fine and allow the air with restriction. But the KNN filter has bigger holes or pores in it mesh and it allows more air into the engine, there by give a little more HP to the engine.

if the filter is new it has some oil on it,so that when dust particles pass thru it will catch those by its adhesive behaviour. After a wash the oil will go and it requires oil on its surface to catch the dust.that is why K&N filters are to be oiled after a wash.

the instructions are clearly given in the box of the filter and also in the K&N site.

If it is a reusable filter, the oil is for when you clean it, instead of buying a new filter. Make sure you use special air filter oil and not just any old 30 weight. The oil assists the filter medium in doing its job. However, if you do re-use the filter, no matter how diligent you are, you'll never get all the dirt out. Do yourself a favor and buy a new filter when the time comes. Hope this helps.

due to the larger openings in the mesh of the filter , the use oil to help catch the dirt. Do not over oil . Spray it and let it weep in . Use only k/n oil and when washing it back flow wash it

Oil traps dirt particles in high flow filters.

The same place that sold the filter will have the K&N oil.

You don't need to spray on oil if it is new,it has been pre-oiled.
