Why did it happen if the boy had never experienced sexual attraction towards that age range? Is it something to worry about and should he seek psychological help?

Honestly, the reason behind it is probably that your hormones are going crazy because as a 17 year old guy, you are almost at your sexual peak and almost anything will arouse you. It has nothing to do with the age most likely, if this kind of thing happens a few times, then yes, seak mental help.

Spontaneous erections are common among teen age boys. There need not be a sexual stimulus. The most likely thing is that this was an accidental occurence and has no significance.
Pedophilia has existed for millenia, but we all have a heightened awareness of it because of recent scandals. I suppose the wise thing to do is to be on the lookout for other evidence of pedophilic behavior, but I think accusations at this point are premature and unwarranted.

I really doubt if the 17 year old boy has a problem,..with pedafilia, that is. Don't you know that boys that age pop boners just walking through the cereal isle at the grocery store. Doesn't mean they wanna do a box of Cocoa Puffs! As my husband put it, he, at that age popped wood in a brisk wind! Their junk is sensitive, hormones going crazy. The baby on his lap was a happy moment, but Mr. Happy got confused. I hope this kid wasn't chastised for it! If it was a hormonal oopsie, then he is humiliated enough........

I'm sure it had nothing to do with the child, and more to do with the fact that the erection wont go away, and the focus on it only makes it worse. This is a difficult situation, but you are normal.
