It was liberals that supported a new concept called Democracy. Conservatives opposed it. They supported King George. Liberals supported the bill of rights. Conservatives opposed it. Liberals were against slavery, conservatives supported it. Liberals were against Child Labor, conservatives supported it. Liberals supported equal rights for women, conservatives opposed them. We are running out of space so I'll get right to the point. In the USA, Liberals supported a war against Adolph Hitler, Conservatives apposedt it. Wake up. Jesus was crucified by conservatives who hated his liberal concepts.

Love your enemy?” Give me a break.

"Liberal" is still a noble word, despite what the brainwashed, knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing loony right-wing fringe says.

A "liberal" as far as the US is concerned is a fairly modern term. The first liberals as an organized political movement occurred around the turn of the 20th century as a response to the Robber Barons and Bolshiviks and were the beggining of the middle class.
Maybe Teddy Roosevelt was the first liberal president? He ran on a "bust the trusts" slogan and he was a republican. Those that supported England were known as "loyalists", those that supported the south during the civil war were democrats or dixiecrats, and the Quakers always were antislavery and you can't get more conservative than them. I'm no supporter of the GOP I'm just pointing out some of your misconceptions.
Liberal is a dirty word today because it's been hijacked by the Democrat party which is definately NOT LIBERAL. The notion of political correctness and revisionist history were originally a Stalin/Bolshevik policy. Hitler used them too. As do those that claim to be Liberal in the US today.
If you were to translate the terms today to their original meanings it would be something like this
Liberal = Socialist
Neo-Cons = Robber Baron/Elitist
Conservatives = individualists = they might be the true classical liberals and you won't see any of them on TV or attached to a political party. Ask yourself does and independent conservative really want to see everything remain the same? Or are they demanding accountabilty and change?
You are a classical liberal as am I and most Americans, we have no representation.

“Liberal” is not a dirty word at all but I can see what you mean. Most of the big mouths here don't have a clue about any group they just like screaming the BS they hear on the radio and television by the idiots on faux news. They actually think these neo-cons care about them while cheering them on while they pi** all over them. It must be an alternative universe most rational people will never understand. Always been a liberal and always damn proud of it.

Liberalism is not a bad thing. I am proud to call myself a liberal. There are so many misconceptions about Liberals and Conservatives. There is not one set view point for each political party. The people within them have the freedom to think for themselves.

Liberal nor Conservative is a dirty word. What I think dirty words in politics is, is "patriotism," "terrorists" and "9/11."

The three most exploited words of the 21st century. (Well, the two most, and the most exploited term)

There will never be a United States without both parties.

No, the word is now used proudly by a much larger number of people than it was before the year 2000.

If the Bush admistration has brought any good to this country, it is in the increasing solidarity of all who are to the "left" of the current administration.

That is now just about everybody. Many of them call themselves "independents"; a few say they are "libertarians." But far more people nowadays proudly identify themselves as liberal.

Thanks to Bush.

it's only considered a dirty word by people of the conservative faction who insist that the liberals are responsible for everything wrong with this country, and the reverse can be said in regards to "conservative" being considered a dirty word.

The far right and far left consider it a dirty word. The rest of us just muddle along and agree to disagree.

No, Liberal is not a dirty word. Liberal is something to be proud of. Liberal is about putting humanity above profit! Only people who don't understand what it really means could possibly think it is a dirty word! *sm*

It has to the indoctrinated. The pseudo-cons pretty much hi-jacked the news media a long time ago. There are 10 pseudo-con pundits on TV for every one liberal pundit. And their favorite thing to demonize is "the liberals". They will tell you that all liberals vote the same way, feel the same way, talk the same way, and want the same things (usually things that NO American would want)... They'll tell you that "the liberals" want mandatory abortions, they'll tell you that "the liberals" want to take away your guns and give them to terrorists, they'll tell you that "the liberals" want to end heterosexual marriage... Whatever it takes to get the bumper-sticker philosophy crowd to follow them.

It works, the ones that don't know it are the same ribbon-shaped-magnet sporting indoctrinated sheep who listen to them.

In the USA, yes, it looks like it's becoming a dirty word, much as conservative is a dirty word here in Canada

Liberal is only a dirty word to those who hate freedom for the individual.
