Wow! There are some really good answers and at least two rotten ones. I agree with the following; depression is sometimes caused by tragic events or chemical imbalance, exercise helps because it releases good chemicals that improves the body chemistry, a healthy diet improves the way the body functions and is a great suggestion. I also believe that sometimes individuals grow up in an environment that does not equip them with the knowledge or skills to deal with certain situations. I believe the saying about knowledge is power. It might be helpful to read a book about depression, join a group that deals with depression, or get some information about goal setting. Then take some steps to take control of what is happening in your life. It is best to start small. Choose one little thing that you can change in the least amount of time with the least amount of effort. Then do something about that one little thing. You will feel better. Now use that feeling and repeat that process again and again. The positive feelings will grow with each success. One other thing that I like to use when it is difficult to gather even one idea is to play a game of collecting rejections. The thing is then it doesn't feel soo bad for things to go wrong and eventually you get it right. Then you start to feel better. Last but not least, when you are depressed you generally feel everything is horrible. Well, if everything is horrible then it can't get any worse, so what do you have to lose by taking a chance at improving your situation?

Depression is usually a chemical imbalance triggered by a lot of emotional factors. In women it can be linked to hormones. I don't know why it feels the way it does, but I'm bipolar and the depression always hurts the worst. If you are feeling depressed for 2 weeks or more you should see a doctor and seek out therapy. This will prevent you from doing something you'll regret.

A variety of reasons ... death ... loss of a friend or a rhythym of life ... a rejection ... a chemical imbalance ... sometimes no discernable reason. Our thoughts become things - depression can be so vicious because the fact that you're feeling badly becomes ALL that you focus on.
A sure cure is consistent exercise coupled with plenty of fruits and vegetables. Exercise will stimulate the mind, body and senses. Even putting on your ipod and dancing for 3-5 minutes can be uplifting. Just move. Eating more vegetables and cleaning up your diet in general can help with any chemical imbalance.

Depression can be brought on by life events like the death of someone close to you. This type of depression is usually only temporary. Clinical depression is an illness that you are born with. It does not go away. The actual chemistry involved in clinical depression is very complex. Far too complex for someone that is not a professional in the field to try to explain. Seek medical help if you are dealing with depression, it can be fatal.

Depression is very deep and just doesn't happen overnight. It builds each day until one day you're in a huge ditch and can't crawl out. You want to scream but yet can't. How does it all begin....well that is different for each person. Some people are depressed due to a childhood trauma, an adult trauma, and more than we'd all like to admit it's in our genes, passed down from a parent or grandparent.

Depression can be caused by situations or things that happened to you in life, by trauma and just by chemical imbalances in the brain. If you haven't yet, you need to get treatment, it won't go away without help, I promise.
