We dated for 1 year, 9 months.

"Successful and Happy"....hmmm.

I think that is a bit relative. Everyones' expectations of marriage would be different; therefore, "Successful" would be a lower threshold of perspective for some than others.

If there is one item I could definitely say regarding marriage, it is truly the ultimate art of delicate compromise.

No marriage is perfect. Then again, it would be rather boring if it were.

Our eighth wedding anniversiary is next month.

My husband and I dated for about 1 month, we have the best marriage ever, we have been together 7 years, but I think I am an exception to the rule, I don't think knowing someone that short of a time and then marrying is a good idea, I think I was very blessed that mine has worked out the way it has.

From the time we met until the time we married, it was less then three months. I realize that most couples wouldn't be ready for marriage after just a few months of dating, but it worked out great for us. We've been married almost ten years and have four beautiful kids together. There was just such a connection with us and we knew we were meant to be together. I wouldn't change our decision to get married so quickly for anything in the world. To this day, he's makes me so happy.

Ha!
There's no secret formula. You don't want to jump into anything too soon, of course, but problems might not surface until several years after you've been together.

I dated my husband for 2 years before we married, and we've been married for 9. I don't know how "happy" and "successful" we are, though. Every marriage will have its ups and downs.

Let's see...One year as friends ONLY (we were both engaged to 2 other people at the time), one year as boyfriend-girlfriend, and one year as fiances, lived together for 3 weeks before marriage, which makes it a total of 3 years. We are going on 17 years of marriage and to be truthful, it seems more like 5 if even that many.

My wife and I got together in 82 moved in together in 83 almost a year to the day. We bought a house in 84 and married in 85. That first year of marriage was a tough one. We think it's because it's part of learning period and because you say your vows to God and it ticks off the devil. But we got past it and we didn't start having kids until 90. Kids really change your life. If we hadn't had all that wonderful time alone to gether before the kids the kids wouldn't have been as much fun.
Hope this helps.

Dated a little over 3 years. Been married over 4 years, just had our first baby six months ago, and people still ask if we are newly weds or on a honeymoon when we go on vacation. That is, of course, if they baby isn't around. :)
