My old DirectX 10 card had 512MB of DDR2 memory. It was far too slow for me. I am returning it for a better one.

I can get one with 256MB of GDDR4 memory.

Or I can get one with 512MB of GDDR3 memory.

Which would be better for playing Civilization IV?

Definitely the GDDR4 memory if you are forced to buy now. You won't need 512MB to play Civilization IV anyway. If you are going to use the 256MB, best go for the faster speed. I have an ATI 1950XTX with 512MB of GDDR4 memory and wow, I am playing all my first person shooter games all over again. But for a strategy game, you will be more than happy. However, if you can save up some more money and be patient, buy the 512MB GDDR4 (yea, I know it is $$$$$).

Get the 512 for future games. However, it'd be more important to move a step up from say a 8600 to 8800. The 256 will be faster, but future games will need that ram for textures.

256mb ddr3 beats 512mb ddr2.

Consider the OC'd 8600GT. It is cheap and pretty fast. It still has plenty of performance reserve. Civ4 will run fast on it.

Well there is a hell of a lot more to a graphics card than just the RAM, so you are asking us to compare things with only a small piece of the information. Post the actual cards, and then we can give you an accurate comparison.
