You heard correctly. They're very sensitive to the water quality and chemistry, yet can't have strong filtration because they're poor swimmers.

They can also be picky about eating and should be fed several small meals throughout the day (which doesn't help keep the water quality good). If you've never kept marine fish before, these aren't a good fish with which to to begin.

So many people ask about seahorses and just for starters most species should only be kept in a minimum sized tank of 30 gallons. Seahorses can grow to 12 inches and need the vertical swimming space to be happy. they are slow eaters so keeping them with other fish may cause them to starve being the other fish will eat the food befor they have the chance to get any which will cause them to slowly starve to death. id recomend keeping them with some sponge, gorgonia or any type of seafan because they like to hold on to it with thier tails. they should also only be kept in a mature tank that has been running for about 6 months and only be kept by an expierenced marine aquarist. There are some species as i just found out that are smaller and can but i believe are harder to find. Do research on these animals befor you decide to keep them, they are very delicate and expensive so losing one will be a big loss

I don't currently have a seahorse but I have kept and bred them in the past. They are quite difficult to keep and very demanding of tank conditions. I wouldn't even try to keep one with other fish, or in a tank that hasn't been running smoothly for at the very least 6 months. A steady supply of live foods will also be very important. Here's a link with loads of great information about keeping and caring for seahorses:

Please note all of the additional links to other articles on this site at the top of the page, they will be at least as important as the first page.

Best of luck!

I don't have one, but I think they are gorgeous too. An amazing fact is that the male of the species is the one that gives birth.
