I have a '98 cavalier and the power steering is leaking. It's left a mark on the ground where I park it and it looks like it's landing right below the reservoir and pump. How hard would it be to at least diagnose and maybe fix the problem? (For two people with access to the right tools and who are fairly mechanically inclined that is.) I'm just trying to get some *intelligent opinions* on if this is something along the lines of rebuilding a transmission kinda hard or replacing the oil pan kinda hard.

to diagnose a leak that's hard to find you can use oil dye, run the car for a while and use a black light to see where the dye is coming from, changing a pump isn't hard if you have a pulley remover and installer, transmissions are not hard to rebuild,but the are very technical, oil pans are generally easy to do, but sometimes they are hard to fish out

Break down and buy a new pump-take off the old one and bolt on a new one--if a mechanic can do it--you can do it. Tightening the belt is an experience thing--over do it and ruin the bearings in one day--too loose and it will squeel like a pig.

If its just replacing the pump its not a bad job.It may be just a bad hose. If the rack is leaking its a big job.
